Here come the dog days of summer. No more holidays, no other big national events to celebrate. So, how do you, as a business or organization, market yourself during this seemingly down period?

The most important thing to remember is the weather. It’s warm, if not hot, which naturally leads to people wanting to get out and enjoy themselves. They want to take vacations with their kids who are already at home for summer break. With so much time on their hands, people need something to do. That’s where you come in.

If you run a hotel, resort, or travel agency, it’s a no-brainer. Send seasonal promos to your current customers via mobile text or email, or set up an automated voice message for that personal touch. To drive in new traffic, you can drop a mobile keyword or QR code that’s tied to exclusive deals in print ads and fliers.

If you’re not in the tourism trade, you can still profit from the great weather. Run a seemingly spur-of-the-moment promotion this Friday or weekend, calling it something instantly memorable, like “Happy Weekend Sale!” (ok, something better than that), or a play on words, such as “The Endless Summer Sale” (see the classic surf movie from 1966). Send your message by multimedia messaging service (MMS) or email to include a mobile coupon and colorful, eye-catching graphics for the summer - sand, beaches, sun, palm trees, pools, ice-cold beers (or replace with ice-cold sodas).

Speaking of cold, refreshing beverages, if you’re the lucky owner of a restaurant, you can run promotions that highlight your dessert menu to draw in customers. Just like how big-box retailers like Target and Wal-Mart use their grocery section to bring in customers to hopefully buy bigger-ticket items, you could use your ice-cream treats and dessert drinks to drive in traffic during lunch or even dinner. Kids love them, but so do adults! Add some interaction by setting up a mobile poll, letting your customers vote on their favorite dessert which will be discounted for a limited time.
