Where Would I Be Without Geotagging?

Posted by Trumpia on Jun 29, 2012

To be honest, I’d probably be lost. Geotagging, coupled with our current impressive mobile technology has made today’s day and age so incredibly and undeniably easy to get places. I wouldn’t doubt that Christopher Columbus is up there, rolling his eyes at our complete obliviousness of how to get places. (Although he did end up on the Americas instead of his intended destination of the West Indies…)

Geotagging enables people to find locations around them, based on geographical metadata that consists of our good friends: longitude and latitude. Based on the coordination of the device, information about the surrounding environment can be instantly pulled and displayed on your device in virtually seconds.

We see traces of geotagging everywhere. New mobile apps are constantly being developed, aimed at informing users of what’s around them. This geo phenomenon has integrated itself into our everyday lives:

Facebook appears to be one of the biggest fans of geotagging, enabling (but then quickly disabling) its users to let their friends know exactly where they are. Facebook even lets you know if a friend has checked-in to a nearby venue.

Yelp has enabled customers to overcome the puzzling hurdle of finding a nearby place to eat. They even go a step farther and provide you with step-be-step directions of how to get to said destination.

But whatever happened to trusty ol’ compasses and detailed maps?

And I’m not talking about your car’s built-in compass that flashes a digitized letter “N” when you’re heading north, or “W” when you’re gallantly riding off into the sunset.

Nor am I referring to Google Maps, that blessed app of pure unadulterated convenience. I’m talking about those intimidatingly massive 7x7 squares of paper, intricately folded into 200 rectangles in an attempt to disguise itself as a friendly brochure.

Let’s not forget our old friend Thomas Guide.  Thomas was a required passenger when I first started driving, dutifully relaying directions to people for years. But with the tidal wave of modern technology, it’s sad to say that Thomas is now a persona non grata—too  bulky, too hard to manage while driving, and simply and sad to say: too outdated.

Regardless, I can’t say that I’m not relieved at the huge lunges that technology has taken to make our lives easier. And I’m pretty curious to see just how much easier technology can make our lives.
