Since I'm sure none of you know who Xmarks is, to understand why it made my day to be in the Top 25 for COMMUNICATION TOOLS you first need to understand what Xmarks does...
Xmarks (formerly Foxmarks) helps you uncover the best sites on the web based on what millions of people are bookmarking in their web browser. Their products are actively used in over three million browsers and they manage over half a billion bookmarks for their users. They extract anonymous information from that corpus of bookmarks to provide web site information and similar site recommendations. Xmarks is a privately held startup backed by Redpoint Ventures in downtown San Francisco.
The company was started by industry veteran Mitch Kapor, a software designer and entrepreneur that founded Lotus Development Corporation in 1982 and designed Lotus 1-2-3 (the ORIGINAL Microsoft Excel), the "killer app" which made the PC ubiquitous in business. He was the founding investor of UUNET, Real Networks, and Linden Labs, the maker of Second Life. He is the co-founder of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, and the founding Chair of the Mozilla Foundation.
Now that you understand who they are, you should understand why this post is so blog worthy. Out of all the 500 MILLION bookmarks managed by Xmarks, we ranked #24 in COMMUNICATION TOOLS!! And on top of that, NONE of our competition even made it to the list.
