Text Message Marketing Dominates the Mobile Space

How often do you text a day? I’ve sent more than 14,000 text messages within the past year! Yep. I was surprised – especially when I realized that this accounted for an average of about 40 messages a day. But I’m sure many of you aren’t impressed by that message count.

It is interesting to know that even though technology has allowed us to check email, send Instant Messages and have face-to-face conversations on our smartphones, texting still reigns supreme. As a result, text message or SMS marketing remains one of the most effective marketing tools.

Text message marketing is so valuable because it does what many channels of marketing fail to do ̶  reach customers directly and instantly in a cost effective way.  Unlike traditional forms of marketing, there is no lag time between sending out the message and customers receiving the message, allowing customers to act more quickly. You can instantly express to them just what you want to convey. They no longer must flip through magazines or drive by billboards to get exposed to your marketing message. As text messaging remains the most used feature on cellphones, SMS marketing continues to be highly effective.

To re-illustrate these points, here are some statistics from the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project report.

  • 73 percent of survey respondents reported that they used their phone for texting, overshadowing the 29 percent who used their phones to access social networking sites and the 31 percent who downloaded mobile applications.
  • A recent Internet Retailer article also recently cited research that SMS campaigns have been deemed more effective than other methods of marketing outreach in reaching consumers with an average response rate of 10 -20 percent -- higher than the five  percent average response rate of email, one to two response rate of direct mail  and one percent  response rate of print.
