Mobile Marketing Now a Priority for Many SMBs

If you are a small or medium-sized business owner (SMB), reaching your customers  ̶  much less drawing them to your store or website  ̶  is no easy feat. And if you are in one of the SMB markets that is dominated by an industry giant, you may not have the same advantage as one of your larger counterparts, which is likely to have a bigger marketing budget, more manpower and a  stronger market presence. So how does your business compete in this landscape?

There is no silver bullet that will guarantee success. But there are some strategies that have been proven to help any small business survive and prosper. One factor is differentiation. Most SMBs are unable to offer the lowest price or pass on the benefit of economies of scale to their customers. But they can provide them with the value of being able to purchase something that they can’t find anywhere else.

Here are some other important factors that can make or break Small or Medium Businesses:

  • Cost management. It’s just good business to provide high quality products while keeping both fixed and variable costs to a minimum.
  • Effective marketing. With limited resources, it is essential to find a cost effective way to connect with your customers and encourage them to buy. In today’s world, there is no better way to do that than with mobile marketing.

A recent survey conducted by Borrell Associates illustrates SMB’s rising interest in mobile marketing. In the survey, Borrell asks small business owners, “How likely is it that you will incorporate mobile elements into your advertising and marketing efforts to reach potential customers?” Forty-eight percent of respondents said “very likely” or “somewhat likely.” A second survey conducted by Borrell this summer reported that four out of every five small businesses plan to spend money on mobile marketing this year. And, on average, these businesses intend to spend more than twenty percent of their ad budgets on mobile campaigns.

What makes these numbers now so significant? Earlier this year, the research reflected that small business’ interest in mobile marketing was not very high. According to a survey conducted by Opus Research last February, eighty-three percent of respondents said they were not executing any mobile marketing or advertising campaigns. In addition, seventy four percent of respondents didn’t have an understanding of how they could use mobile marketing to reach potential customers.

Take what you will from these surveys. But it seems that interest in mobile marketing is spreading like wildfire – especially for SMBs, which need big results fast even if they don’t have the luxury of huge budgets and tons of time to wait for sales revenues to increase.
