According to a study by ABI Research, consumers worldwide will send more than 7 trillion SMS messages in 2011 from nearly 4.2 billion mobile subscriptions. The study indicates SMS as a fast growing marketing channel – huge opportunity for marketers.

The study found that messaging is more prevalent among younger subscribers, and as they replace older subscribers, messaging will get a further boost. According to ABI Research industry, believes that the future of mobile messaging will increasingly be in unified toolkits that mash up and converge text and multimedia messages, IM chats, emails and voicemails.

The key finding is the astounding number of SMS that gets sent annually. Neil Strother, practice director at ABI Research dubs it “the key communication tool of the modern era” – a place where marketers can communicate and interact with consumers.

Since messaging is a tool for the enterprise as well as for individuals. Mobile messaging has distinct advantages for companies communicating with their customers. It is a universal, cost-effective and reliable, and most people have their phones with them and switched on most of the time. Plus, not everyone has a smartphone, and communicating via SMS is the best way to reach a wide audience.
