Did you know that in some states, you can actually text 911 rather than call them? Check out how texting can save lives by reading this blog!
Did you know that in any emergency situation, you can actually text 911 depending on what state you live in? Contrary to mainstream media and movies, you actually do not need to risk your life just to explain to the law enforcement what you need. This is so critical to know especially when you need to hide or get information across really quickly. Calling 911 is always going to be a great option, but sometimes texting can make the world of a difference, especially when text messages have the ability to send in a fraction of the time it takes to explain your situation on a call.
Luckily, texting 911 is also an easy process. Here is how you can text law enforcement today:
- Enter 911 in the number field when you are drafting a new message
- For your message, get straight to the point and express what emergency you are facing. Make sure you include the following if you are pressed for time:
- A one sentence summary of what happened
- Location
- Physical condition/needs
- If the situation is still dangerous
- Send the message and answer any follow up questions from the operator if you can. If someone needs help quickly and you don’t have time to wait for help to arrive, ask them for specific advice such as CPR or safety practices.
Why would you need to text law enforcement as opposed to calling them? Consider the following situations:
- Emergency situations where you cannot talk
- Emergency situations where cell reception is bad and you cannot complete a phone call
- If you are deaf or have difficulty hearing.
All of this can potentially save your life or save someone’s life. If your area does not have access to texting 911, consider that you can also use SMS texting to set up ways you can send out critical alerts. Check out some of our use cases here.
